A layered sequency of volcanic lapilli (tuff)) is exposed at low tide at the southern end of the beach in front of Taroona High School. [Lapilli are droplets of molten/ semi-molten lava ejected from a volcanic, cooling as they travel through the air ( Wikipedia). These lapilli tuffs formed by the violent eruption about 60-40 million years ago (early Tertiary), of a nearby volcano (possibly) located somewhere within the Derwent River.
