Permian rocks are exposed on the narrow rock platform at Shag Bay. They are like the rocks that form Bellerive Bluff. They are fine grained/sandy mudstones, with abundant dropstones - indicating their quiet-water, sub-polar deposition. Abundant linear grooves mark the platform surface : trace-fossils of stick-like plant material. Abundant pock-like indentations also dot. the rock platform surfaces. These may be the result of erosion of softer-sediment clasts, themselves possibly related to the few, large (30 cm diam) spherical clay balls exposed near the old factory boiler.
