The cliffs here are composed of layers of fine un-fossiliferous sandstone and mudstones, formed when Tasmania was located close to the southpole. Rock debris from melting glaciers were deposited as drop stones onto the seafloor.

Above-Top: Gondwana supercontinent ~270 million years ago. Extensive continent-scale deformation caused by tectonic plate- convergence (lower red line). Note Australia’s location close to the South Pole. This position was approximately maintained until about 60 Mya (Tertiary Period). Below- location of major Permian sedimentary basins.
